Gough Whitlam opened the first hostel, as it was then called, at Watson Street in 1975 where there were 31 residential care beds. Continuing in the residential care tradition, the Bellorana Nursing Home was opened in 1990 to provide 30 high care beds.
A rise in demand for independent living saw Bellorana establish Oakman Gardens in 1987, with 16 independent living units, now called RFBI Bellingen Masonic Retirement Village.
