Residential care: secure, compassionate assisted living

Whether the onset of health problems is gradual or sudden, if the need to seek assistance and comfort increases, RFBI Hawkins Masonic Village can provide an assisted lifestyle which includes round-the-clock nursing and medical care.

We are well aware that the decisions involved cause rising levels of concern both personally and for your loved ones. You will find us completely attuned to your needs, and dedicated to helping both you and your family adapt to the many changes ahead.

You can count on our compassionate and caring staff to listen to your needs in detail and provide the right options for you.

Combining the best of country and city life

RFBI Hawkins Masonic Village nestles in quiet bushland in the outer Newcastle suburb of Edgeworth, close to beautiful Lake Macquarie, on 16 hectares of land donated by Albert Hawkins.

You will be enchanted by the beautifully maintained gardens, outdoor areas and courtyards overlooking the tranquil views. The village is conveniently located only 3km from the F3 Freeway, 3km to Edgeworth shopping centre and 20km from Newcastle city centre. We are dedicated to helping you enjoy a sociable and fulfilling lifestyle here — but helping you preserve your privacy and be as relaxed as you like.

For the many enjoyable activities on offer, we provide an on-site community hall for fashion parades, movies, parties, meetings, concerts and family functions.

We also provide individual activity programs that include bingo, crafts, discussion groups, movement to music, sing-a-longs, choir practice, bus trips, shuffleboard, dances, high teas and games. You will also have access to the village library, genealogy library and internet kiosk.

There is also a men’s shed, open to all male residents, enabling them to take part in activities like woodwork, metalwork, welding, toy making, model railway tasks and social functions. We also have a craft room, open to all who are crafty!

To help you get around outside the village, we have two 12-seater coaches, mainly used for outings, including shopping. Public transport buses also come right into the village.

As of the 1st July 2014, new residents have greater choice on how to pay for their accommodation costs. These choices include:

  1. Residents can choose to pay for accommodation by a refundable deposit (RAD) paid as a lump sum,
  2. A daily payment (DAP), or
  3. A combination of both

A daily payment accrues daily and is paid periodically (e.g. fortnightly). A combination payment includes both a partial lump sum and daily payments. As RFBI offers a variety of accommodation options and prices we encourage you and your family to discuss your needs with a financial adviser to ensure that you are receiving the best financial outcome available to you.

Our published Accommodation Payment prices are our maximum rates and will apply for those with adequate financial means.

Residents with limited assets may be treated as “supported” by the Department of Social Services. This means that you will not be required to pay the published Accommodation Payment. If you are not treated as “supported”, but affordability is still a factor, be assured this will not necessarily affect your eligibility for accommodation.

The Daily Accommodation Payment (DAP) amounts quoted above are current as of today and may change (in line with interest rate adjustments) for entry dates after the 1st July. When there are changes to the interest rate RFBI will update the new DAP’s based on the new quarterly interest rate.

History

In 1968, local ambulance man Edgars Lideman saw the need for a retirement village in the area and approached local businessman Albert Hawkins for a donation. Albert donated 16 hectares (over 40 acres) of land, forming a partnership with RFBI.

Our first residential care village, providing 30 high-care beds, was completed in 1975. Between 1979 and 2007, three new houses were added, providing a further 101 beds. We upgraded and refurbished all  our single and double rooms in Grevillea House in 2008, which was officially opened by the Governor General, Ms Quentin Bryce AC, CVO, in June 2009.
