Take A Moment With…Jessica

“I go to work every day and get to plan and run activities that enable residents to live their best lives.”

Jessica is one of our amazing Leisure & Lifestyle Officers working in RFBI Lake Haven Masonic Village. She began her career with us whilst studying at Wyong TAFE – her 120 hours of placement led her to our community. She hasn’t looked back.

“I feel very lucky to be a part of the RFBI team. Every day I assist residents to participate in activities that provide them with mind stimulation and enjoyment, create socialising opportunities and memorable moments, and bring fun to special occasions and themed days,” Jessica shares.

“Everyday is different. We are always evaluating activities and coming up with new ideas or ways to improve so residents have the best experience and get the most from their outings.”

She shares that one of the more surprising experiences of working in aged care is how much you learn through the life stories and wisdom of residents. An experience she wanted to share with her seventeen-year-old son, who now volunteers in the village. He has enjoyed the experience so much that he has enrolled into a Certificate IV in Leisure and Health at TAFE, just like his mum.

Jessica shares that there are countless special moments she experiences in her days which she wanted her son to have too.

“One moment I always remember is this – I would read positive quotes to the group after a tradition and one resident would regularly ask me for the paper I had written them on for their collection. One day, they said they had a quote for me, about me. It was:

‘Your smile is your logo,

Your personality is your business card,

And the way you make others feel is your trademark.’

“I think it is pretty spot on to what the job is all about.”

Jessica is well-known for her positive energy and ability to make people feel comfortable instantly. She thrives on hearing how well an event or activity was received by residents and their families, and being told they can’t wait until the next one.

“Working in aged care is more than providing physical care. It’s about being a friend. It’s not just about listening, but providing comfort, compassion and respecting privacy. It requires focus, reliability, consistency and most of all, empathy and compassion. It requires hard work, but is so rewarding and will make your heart feel full.”
