Take A Moment With… Ishaka from our Global Citizen Exchange Program

Sonia Lim 29 Mar 2022

Meet Ishaka – a registered nurse in Sri Lanka who has moved to Australia to continue her nursing career through our partnership with Key 2 Learning’s Global Citizen Exchange Program. Ishaka is now working as a Carer at RFBI Glen Innes Masonic Village where she receives valuable hands-on experience while studying for her Certificate III in Individual Support.

Ishaka said she has learnt how to effectively communicate with residents, the safest techniques to avoid injury while moving and assisting our residents (manual handling) as well as personal care management. This opportunity has allowed her to fulfil her career and life dream without the challenges of obtaining a visa, and to live a higher quality of life.

“The program has been really helpful. I have adjusted well to the Australian work environment and have been able to learn and observed the high standard of care since working in RFBI Glen Innes Masonic Village.”

“I am enjoying the experience here in Australia. I am very happy with my training, work and independence I have been given.”

Ishaka’s goal now is to become a registered nurse that in recognised in Australia and to work with RFBI for a long time.

“I feel very lucky. I love nursing, learning from older Australians through their life experiences and being able to help and support them,” Ishaka said.

Ishaka has really embraced Australian culture and meeting new people through her work at RFBI. Her fondest moment has been at our recent Christmas party where she made new friends, played games she’d never participated in before and learnt more about Australian culture.
