Take a moment with Abbie-Lee

Sonia Lim 9 May 2022

Abbie-Lee has become a well-known aged care icon in her community after winning the Community Colleges Australia Student of the Year 2021 Award. Abbie was an early school leaver who took time out from studying to support her young family but it was her courage and commitment to improving her life that has led her to career in aged care. Abbie is now a Carer at RFBI Kurri Kurri Masonic Village and her friend’s say that she has an in-depth understanding and appreciation of people in the later stages of their life.

“Looking after aged adults can be challenging for some people. As for me, I revel in looking after the elderly with a passion that comes from knowing that this stage of life is at its most delicate and requires someone to look after them with compassion,” Abbie-Lee shared.

“Our elderly has led amazing lives and I’m privilege to be able to be someone who can care for them”.

Abbie-Lee said that her job is both busy and very rewarding assisting residents in every way, including showering, wound care, neuro observations and providing a voice for residents.

“Most people think aged care is dancing and taking strolls in the park. It is so much more than that. Some days are harder than others, but every day is rewarding.”

Her transition into aged care wasn’t a seamless one. Abbie was an early school leaver and young mother, so pursuing her dream career was put on the backburner so she could care for her family (little Lillie-Rose and Charley). When the opportunity arose again, Abbie completed her Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) with Atwea College and started with our team. It’s that perseverance that earned her the Student of the Year Award.

“Working in aged care is not a job, it’s a career. I’m so glad I followed it with my heart. Whilst seeing residents pass is hard, having the opportunity to care for our residents every day is so rewarding and the best feeling in the world.”
