Meet Kim, RFBI’s Care at Home Operations Manager

Sonia Lim 24 Apr 2025

Kim’s journey in the home care sector is a testament to the power of empathy, respect and dedication to improving the lives of others. With over three decades of experience, Kim’s career has evolved from a humble volunteer role to a leadership position within RFBI, where she continues to impact the lives of elderly individuals and those in need of support.

A lifelong commitment to care

Kim’s introduction to RFBI came during her final years of schooling when she volunteered in the administration team, assisted with events and engaged with nursing home residents through pet therapy and entertainment. Her passion for helping others grew over time and she transitioned into nursing, where she spent the next seven years honing her skills. Throughout her career, Kim has had the opportunity to work in diverse sectors, including community nursing, public and private hospital settings and the home care sector.

Her work has also extended beyond the local scene, as Kim’s expertise took her both interstate and internationally to support elderly clients during holidays and short trips. She has worked in general practice, conducting health assessments and managing GP care plans, while collaborating with external stakeholders and the Department of Health and Ageing to improve elderly care. Each of these experiences has shaped Kim’s philosophy of care, which centers on learning from others and striving for continuous improvement.

The call to home care

Kim’s decision to pursue a career in home care wasn’t by chance, it was rooted in a deep respect for the aging community. “I’ve always had a deep respect for the aging community, recognising the richness in their stories and experiences,” Kim shares. For her, supporting individuals in their homes isn’t just about providing care, it’s about showing empathy, respect and kindness. Whether it’s lending a listening ear or offering small gestures of support, Kim believes that every act, no matter how small, can make a world of difference.

Returning to RFBI

Having started her career with RFBI, Kim was excited to return when the opportunity arose. She saw it as a natural progression in her career. “RFBI is where I started my career, so when I was approached about this opportunity, it felt like the right time,” Kim explains. Her primary focus in her new role is to foster a supportive, cohesive team environment. By working together in harmony, Kim believes that staff can deliver better care for clients and make a positive impact on their lives.

Kim also recognises that the home care sector has undergone significant changes and she’s determined to guide RFBI through this evolving landscape. “Collaboration is a top priority,” she says. By addressing gaps in staff training and improving communication with clients, Kim aims to create an environment where everyone, from clients to staff, feels supported and understood.

The foundation of quality care

For Kim, the key to ensuring that potential clients feel heard and confident in choosing RFBI for their home care needs lies in empathy, trust and clear communication. She believes that actively listening to clients’ needs is essential to providing personalised care. “It’s about understanding their unique story and showing them respect,” she notes. “Trust is foundational in any relationship, especially in home care.”

Additionally, Kim emphasises the importance of consistency and clarity in care. Clients must feel reassured that they can rely on RFBI for ongoing support and that their needs will be met with professionalism and compassion at every stage of their journey.

Outside of work

When she’s not working, Kim enjoys a variety of hobbies that allow her to unwind and recharge. Cruising is one of her favourite ways to relax, offering a peaceful escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Kim also enjoys jet skiing, feeling the fresh air as she explores local waters and fishing, which provides another outlet for relaxation.

Photography is another of Kim’s passions, one that she’s been pursuing for over 20 years. She has had the privilege of capturing everything from intimate moments to large events, including the Olympics. Kim finds great joy in capturing the raw emotions of success, failure and personal growth, something that resonates deeply with her professional life as well. “Photography reminds me of how universal the human experience is,” she says. “No matter our age, we all go through our struggles and triumphs and it’s the respect we give and receive that truly defines the experience.”

A journey of growth and learning

Kim’s journey into the home care sector was not one she initially expected. Growing up in a family of medical professionals, she initially considered careers in law enforcement or the defence sector. However, her natural ability to care for and support others led her to nursing, where she has spent most of her professional life. “I’ve learned a lot from my colleagues and the people I’ve worked with,” Kim shares. “The relationships I’ve built have allowed me to grow both personally and professionally.”

Kim’s story is a powerful reminder that even the most unexpected paths can lead to fulfilling careers. It’s clear that, despite early reservations, Kim’s true passion lies in helping others in meaningful ways and she continues to make a significant impact on the lives of those she cares for. As Kim takes on new challenges at RFBI, one thing is certain. Her dedication to providing exceptional care, fostering strong relationships and continuously improving will continue to make her a valued asset to RFBI and the clients she serves.
