Our residents across our villages love a good party. So when Mexican Independence Day was looming, it was no surprise that the residents in our RFBI Holt Masonic Village in Canberra were keen to celebrate.

On the 16th of September, Mexicans around the world come together to celebrate the anniversary of the country’s independence from Spain in 1810. The day is celebrated with fireworks, fiestas, parades, dance, music and good food.

To commemorate the occasion, our Leisure & Lifestyle team planned out a Mexican-themed day across all our usual activities. The daily morning exercises residents participate in were structured around the beat of Mariachi music, before inviting everyone together for some Mexican themed brain games to keep the mind and body active.

Residents chose from a delicious Mexican-themed menu for lunch, including chicken enchiladas or a Mexican beef casserole. Of course, lunch was finished with a tasty dessert – mango panna cotta was on the menu for the day and residents said it was a delicious treat.

The afternoon wound down (or wound up is probably more accurate) with a lively Mexican themed happy hour, where everyone had a good chat and laugh together.

The day was a huge success and one we’ll keep on the calendar for years to come.
