The road between Tamworth and Armidale has become a familiar one for residents of RFBI Armidale Masonic Village, as they continue to grow a very special bond with the children and educators from Yarm Gwanga Preschool.

For nearly two years, our intergenerational program with the preschool children has been a highlight of our village calendar. By maintaining regular, monthly visits, the residents and the children have become true friends who look forward to every catch-up.

Our intergenerational programs are built on variety and exploration. Once a month the residents head out into the community to meet the children for a shared adventure. Whether it’s exploring the Natural History Museum or, as we did during our most recent catch-up, making the most of the beautiful weather at Central Park, these outings are filled with discovery.

The picnic in the park was a particular standout. Between the sunshine and the sandwiches, residents were thoroughly entertained by the children’s tree-climbing skills! It was a day of pure, simple joy that reminded everyone that you’re never too old for a picnic in the park and some fun in the sunshine.

The connection doesn’t stop at the park. Once a month, the children also make the trip to visit us at RFBI Armidale Masonic Village. These mornings are filled with shared activities and games, followed by a lively lunch in our dining room.

While the photos capture the smiles, they don’t quite show the deep sense of purpose these interactions provide. For the residents, these visits offer a sense of play and vitality; for the children, they offer a chance to learn from a generation with a lifetime of wisdom to share.

We look forward to many more years of picnics, outings and indoor adventure with our little friends from Yarm Gwanga.
