Grandparents are the absolute best. Not only are they there for you when you’re feeling up or down, but they give the ultimate bear hugs. So on Sunday 25th October, National Grand Parents Day, we want to celebrate all the grandparents in our care and thank them for their love and wisdom.

Across our organisation, we have many residents who are proud grandparents and asked them what they love most being a grandparent. Eric Makey from RFBI Hawkins Masonic Village said, “I have 13 grandchildren and I love spoiling them as they do to me! They have so many names for me – pommy, poppy and big pop; I love them to bits.”

One of our corporate partners, Planix Projects, has introduced an initiative, ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ as part of their Rebuild 2020 Initiative, which is designed to ease the loneliness felt by some people living in aged care by connecting them with a member from the Planix team and creating a new friendship.

Rikki Marks, Assistant Project Manager for Planix Projects has found the program to be truly rewarding for her.

“This program means so much to me as I used to be very involved in aged care outreach programs in high school, and ever since starting a career it gets harder and harder finding the time to prioritise these initiatives.”

“I feel very privileged to work for a company that has allowed us the time to reach out once again and be involved in the “Adopt a Grandparent” program. Both sides of the conversation gains so much fulfilment from the experience!”

Another member from the Planix team, Oliver Oulsnam, commented, “I am looking forward to reconnecting with people from a generation that I once had a very strong relationship with.”

“Since losing the last of my grandparents over 10 years ago, I hope I am able to form a friendship and share stories with someone from a similar time in life as them.”

“This is a fantastic initiative and hopefully brings joy to both of us!”

Grant Harcourt, resident from RFBI Tamworth Masonic Village, was our first resident to be adopted and had his first video chat a couple of weeks ago. He was thrilled to be part of the program and able to meet someone new.

“‘Adopt a Grandparent’ is a great idea and I am so grateful to be a part of it.”

“It gives me something to look forward to chatting with my adopter, Mel. It’s really lovely having another friend outside of the Village.”
